Evaluating our class 039 market lambs weighing 127 to 135 I find it's easily a top pair and bottom pair class.  With all lambs exhibiting features I view as unacceptable for show lambs at these weights, the problem becomes deciding which faults to place the most value to.  I have no problem with switching lambs within the top pair or the bottom pair as long as these lambs are placed within those pairs.  Placing either of the bottom lambs in the top is suggestive of much more study.

I place class 039  2, 1, 4, 3   with cuts of 2, 8, 2.

First Place:  2

Entry number:  186

Exhibitor:  shepherdmom

State:  TX

Sheep name/number:  721

Breed:  Suffolk/Hampshire

I started the class with the 2 lamb. Granting some weakness over the loin and lack of correctness in the rear legs, this wether still places first for me with his length from flank to flank and superior depth of twist to our second place lamb. With only pictures to judge I'd guess this lamb to be on the thin side of desired fat cover.

Second Place:  1

Entry number:  177

Exhibitor:  2TLivestock

State:  NE

Sheep name/number:  Tres

Breed:  Suffolk

Following our class winner is the 1 ewe lamb. Granted she is the smoothest topped, more correct in finish lamb in the class, but her short length flank to flank puts her in second.   I also fault her to a lesser degree for that slope in the hip and low set to the neck.

As stated in my opening you can easily switch the lambs in this top pair with good reasons.

Third Place:  4

Entry number:  213

Leading our bottom pair of lambs I went with the 4 wether.  To me both the lambs in the bottom pair lack the style and quality to be considered "show lambs."  I find the lamb smoother in the top and more correct on his rear legs.

Fourth Place:  3

Entry number:  195

I Placed the 3 ewe lamb last in a fairly close pair. While 3 likely has more volume in the rear with her deeper twist the post legged structure puts her below the 4 lamb.

To repeat: I have no problem at all switching lambs within this pair as long as 4 and 3 are the bottom pair.
