4 best combines balance, structural correctness and muscle. No, he is not the stoutest boned, nor most rugged constructed in class, however his advantages in skeletal design and balance allow him to easily top his contemporaries in this class. The white pelted wether is elevated in the floor of his chest, cleaner through the point of his shoulders, and nearly dead level down his top and out of his dock. In regards to balance, he is more wedged up through his front end and progressively widens from front to rear. Most importantly, he is extremely square and elevated over his rack, wider and flatter over his loin, and ties to a fuller, deeper, lower inside leg.

2 is a thick made, rugged appearing lamb that is really blown out in his upper dock. Unfortunately, he is deeper and rounder through his chest and shoulder, and the dark fiber around his lower leg makes him appear shallow twisted and lighter through his lower third. Still, he decisively places over 1 in the middle based on muscle and condition alone. He is further along in his feeding phase, and the added condition make him thicker and smoother all the way down his topline, as well the added maturity gives him a fuller look to his dock and greater width through the center of his stifle.

The ewe lamb may certainly make a better market lamb in the end, as her longer neck ties better into the top of a smoother shoulder, and she is shallower hearted and deep flanked, leading me to believe she will have a better look on the profile in the future. The problem is that she is giving up a great deal of condition and maturity to the other three, so I choose to leave her third. With these faults aside, her balance and expressive muscle shape allow 2 to place over the other blue tinted wether in the bottom pair. She is squarer and truer in the shape to her rack, longer and leveler out of her dock, and appears to be firmer and more shapely through her lower leg.

3 is a long sided, big boned wether, however that is where his advantages end in this group. In reality, he is the heaviest conditioned lamb in class that is getting the majority of his width from fat rather than muscle. He reads round in his top shape and out of his dock, funnels in his leg, and appears soft over his rack, rib and leg as well.
The placing of this class is 4, 2, 1, 3 with cuts of 4, 3, 5. A challenging class with a good one to start, some challenge in the middle due to differences in maturity, and one at the bottom that prospective lamb buyers need to learn to see. This type will look nice and bloomy at a sale and never improve. Vigorous exercise will help this lamb some, but he will never have the correct muscle shape of the top 3. In contrast the ewe lamb is awful green in her photos, but should only get better with feed and time.
Happy 4th to all MyLambers!
