In what I think is a great class to sort with a lot of logic in how these lambs line up, I like them 2, 3, 4, 1 with cuts of 4, 4, 5.

2 dominates the class in regards to muscle, balance and structural correctness. I’ll be the first to admit, that he is not the largest framed or pounds heavy lamb of the class. Yet, he is the most level down his topline, by far the flattest and fullest out of his upper dock, appears to be most ideal in his finish, and draped with loads of muscle. More specifically, he is wider than 3 over his rack and loin, plumper through his center leg, and better maintains his thickness to the lower third of his leg thus overwhelming the other three lambs with showring appeal as well as practical carcass merit.

Sure, 3 appears to be longer sided and to possess a higher percentage of hindsaddle. Unfortuately he is lighter muscled and frailer in his make up so he is second. Still in comparison to the other Hampshire influence wether, he is much trimmer made, wider and flatter over his loin edge, and reads to have more true muscle shape and expression and consequently would rail a higher cutablity carcass with a greater percentage of bonless closely trimmed retail cuts.

Some may prefer the size advantage and added bone of the 4 , but this is where his advantages to the top pair end, as in reality, he is the heaviest conditioned lamb in class that lacks the muscle shape of the top two. The added fat he is carrying gives him a false appearance in regards to his thickness and I would predict him to handle soft and spongy down his top. Still it is his balance and structural correctness that places him over the dark fibered ewe in the concluding pair. 4 is more angular through his shoulder, ties his neck smoother into a stronger topline, is flatter out of his dock, and bigger footed and stouter constructed than 1, and should hang more total lbs of product.

The tinted ewe lamb is certainly leaner and trimmer than 4, unfortunately she is the smallest framed, frailest made lamb in the class that is short and round in her muscle pattern, weak topped and off in her hip, so she is last.
