Class number:  127        Class Date:  1/16/10

Judge:   Del Petersen

 Judging Contest Winners:

Under 15: dm1668

15-18: lambboy

Over 18: shadowran

Official Placing: 4, 1, 3, 2
Cuts: 2, 3, 4

This is class that brings forth many points that judges see when placing showmanship classes. I went over this class many times before I decided upon my placing. Each of the exhibitors had good and weak points. I placed the class 4, 1, 3, 2.

First Place:  4

Entry number: 705

Exhibitor: dustydivider

State: CA

The decision to start 4 was a problem in that the photographer had the wrong angle of the front view. If an exhibitor gave me a front view like that I would put her to bottom. That said she is doing the front view correctly. She has the best neck and head set with just a slight too much nose up. She should have had rear legs set back about three inches. Four appears to have the most overall control of her sheep and has the most drive in this class. In all views the lambs is set and the exhibitor looks alert.

Second Place:  2

Entry number: 543

Exhibitor: Curlie

Sheep name/number: Kimmy
State: UT

I am placing exhibitor 1 second as she had the lamb well under control and set up superior to all in the rear view. There are three main points that placed this lamb down into second. The neck set on the profile is back past 90 degrees. This is uncomfortable for sheep and it will start moving. The next point is the head is out of line in the front view and should be adjusted away a few inches from the exhibitor. In the rear view, the nose is held too high and ear set is not natural for me.

Third Place:  1

Entry number: 606

Placing exhibitor number 3 third was based on the fact that the exhibitor was too close to the wall and could not position herself properly. On the profile the exhibitor is crowded into wall so is standing with her legs not positioned properly. The hind legs need to be an inch or two forward. The hair at the hock needs to be blended at shear line. In the front view the legs need an inch or two more separation and the head is tilted with the correct neck placement. The rear view has too wide a rear leg set with an uneven front leg set and the exhibitor is not in proper stance to present lamb.

Fourth Place:  3

Entry number: 546

I am placing exhibitor number 2 fourth for having the lamb on a halter. Halters are to be removed went entering the ring for showmanship. With that being said I do like the neck position and leg placement on the profile although his nose is too high. The lamb is slightly roached on topline and needs to be tapped down. This lamb may have an excessive fill as it shows a larger than desired belly. The front view presents the problem of leg placement too close together and head out of line with body.

This class is placed 4, 1, 3, 2 with cuts of 2, 3, 4.
