Official Placing: 4, 1, 2, 3
Cuts: 6, 3, 1

This class of ewe lambs has an easy top pair, an easy middle pair, and, the bottom pair is a toss-up. I placed the class 4, 1, 2, 3 with cuts of 6, 3, 1.

First Place:  4

Entry number: 864

Exhibitor: PeteM

State: OK

Sheep name/number: HR Maples 10-04B Evil

Breed: Hampshire

4 is an easy choice to start the class as she completely dominates the class.  This medium plus frame, heavy boned Hamp ewe is the most balanced ewe in the class.  Starting with the profile she is about as correct as you will find, especially with a power sheep, in her front.  Her long muscular neck sits on top of her shoulder, and, when you desire balance along with profile that has to be a given.  Extremely clean at the points and evidently clean in the brisket.  She has width of chest floor that’s going to open up into a massive rack and loin.  She has the correct depth of shoulder and her top line is long and level.  Perfect rib shape showing both volume and capacity.  Long and level in her hip with fullness in the flank.  Her rear view validates her profile shot. The neck blends in perfect with the top of the shoulder and she is wide and flat over her rack and she maintains this width and flatness as you travel down the rack into the loin.  Note the depth of the loin edge.  She is wide and square through the pins, deep in her twist with a long smooth muscular leg.    She stands very correct on her feet and legs with the dimension of bone the industry is looking for.  She will work in any flock in the country and is the type of ewe progressive breeders are striving to breed. Side note...I appreciate the way the handler has her set up.

Second Place:  1

Entry number: 7989

Exhibitor: Sheepherder007

StateK: OK

Sheep name/number: Kelby's Ewe

Breed: cross

1 is an easy second in the class.  She might look to be a little narrow on the profile, however, most of this is due to camera angle as she shows some thickness from the rear.  Starting with the profile  she has a long neck, however, the neck placement looks to be a little low set.  She is balanced with a long level top line.  I would like to see more evidence  of rib shape and she does cut up slightly in the rear flank.  She is clean in the front, clean at the points, however, I would call her width of chest floor moderate.  Too me, she shows more evidence of thickness when viewed from the rear than the profile. I would call her moderately wide and flat at the front of the rack, however, she appears to widen as you travel down the rack and loin.  I would like to widen her out at the pins, square her up at the dock.  She is average in depth of twist and I would like to see more evidence of muscle, especially in her lower third.  Although she stands correct on her feet and legs I would like to increase bone dimension.

Third Place:  2

Entry number: 815

The two ewe lambs with the least quality, especially when we are considering wether dams, make up the bottom pair.  With close observation I believe 2 has fewer deficiencies than 3 so she will stand third in the class.  2 easily places over 3 on profile, correctness of front, and length of side.  She does have a skeletal flaw in her hip.  Although she is long and level in her top she does not have the rack, loin, and hip shape you want to see in sheep class, breeding or market. She is frail in her skeleton which suggest a hard doing sheep. She is lacking in rib shape and size and cuts up in the rear flank.  From the rear notice the slope to the hip instead of the wide and flat  hip of the two ewes placing above her.  She is extremely pinched at the pins, shallow in the twist and deficient of leg muscle with very little muscle in her lower third.

Fourth Place:  3

Entry number: 855

In dropping 3 to the bottom of the class I do so because she has more skeletal issues than number 2.  First, from the profile I notice how short sided she is.  She has to much depth of shoulder and this takes from her balance.  she may be heavy in the brisket.  She does have more correct rib shape than number 2, however, she slopes off the dock and when viewed from the rear you notice how short hipped she is and how narrow she is at the pins.  She is moderate in twist depth but lacking in her lower third.  To me she is “plain” in her body type and appearance.

Again, I placed the class 4, 1, 2, 3 with cuts of 6, 3, 1. Your comments are welcomed.
