Official Placing: 3-1-4-2
Cuts: 2-4-2

In a class of high quality Hampshire yearlings, I like them 3-1-4-2 with cuts of 2-4-2.

First Place:  3

Entry number: 1158

Exhibitor: PeteM

State: OK

Sheep name/number: HR Maples 12-309R Angie

Breed: Hampshire

In in initial pair of bolder ribbed, higher volume, bigger pinned ewes, I prefer the added femininity and smoothness of shoulder possessed by 3. As a bonus she is equally as big topped and wide in her pin set. Most importantly she is more uniform and smooth down her topline and at her hip loin juncture, and I would predict her to produce thick made lambs that would have a little extra look and balance if comparably mated.

Second Place:  1

Entry number: 1156

Exhibitor: PeteM

State: OK

Sheep name/number: MB Maples 12-803R Calie

Breed: Hampshire

Now there is now doubt that 1 iis the stout constructed momma cow of the set, unfortunately she is slightly too coarse made for me to use as a class winner in this group. Still I much prefer her added base width that transposes through her midrib and up to the top of her skeleton better than her remaining two contemporaries. In addition she is a lbs heavier, thicker ended ewe with a much bigger and bolder hip that should produce high performing heavy muscled progeny that would excel in the show ring and on the rail.

Third Place:  2

Entry number: 1159
Exhibitor: PeteM
State: OK
Sheep name/number: HR Mapels 10-301R Annie
Breed: Hampshire

In sticking with the base advantages and skeletal width advantages of the top two, 4 logically follows in third. Unfortunately she gets somewhat low in her neck set and through the floor of her chest and is shorter coupled than the two that lead off. Still in comparison to 2, she is bolder ribbed, wider topped and simply more powerful in her overall construction. This all adds up to an easier keeping ewe that squares up more out of her dock and should result in a greater number of multiple births, more ease when lambing and the ability to better maintain herself while lactating.

Fourth Place:  4

I can certainly appreciate the elegance on the profile, smooth shoulder and added femininity of 2. Yet in reality, she is the narrowest ribbed, least capacious ewe that lacks the overall muscularity of the top 3. Consequently she is more likely to have higher maintenance requirements and just as likely produce the frailer, lighter muscled lambs if ran in the same mating system as the others.
