In another difficult class of quality ewe lambs, I like them 4-1-2-3 with cuts of 5-3-2.

First Place:  4

Entry number: 1215

Exhibitor: lm1668

State: OH

Sheep name/number:

Breed: crossbred

4 is a clear class winner that best combines balance, muscle and volume in a feminine package. Ideally the class winner could be a little longer hipped, however that is getting nit-picky on an extremely well balanced good ribbed female that in comparison to 1 is longer necked, much smoother at the point of her shoulder and tucked neater through her breastplate. From here she transitions more smoothly into a bolder, higher volume ribcage. As a bonus she is squarer racked, wider and fuller over her loin edge and plumper through her center legs. She is definitely the one in the class with the most versatility in the show ring and breeding pen alike.

Second Place:  1

Entry number: 1165

Exhibitor: DonD1

State:

Sheep name/number: Drewry 13265

Breed: Hampshire

1 logically follows her as the other stout constructed, thicker ended ewe of the class. Unfortunately she is simply too heavy fronted and rough down her topline to place over a very good class winner.

Still, as we compare her to 2 in the middle pair, she is wider based, squarer off of her hind two and possesses more shape and dimension to all aspects of her leg. Most importantly she gives more of a wedge shape to her body, and opens up more through her pelvic cavity and better maintains her width advantages in her pin set.

Third Place:  2

Entry number: 1184
Exhibitor: EmsoffLambs
State: CA
Sheep name/number: Emsoff 0311
Breed: Hampshire x

Some may prefer the body design and elegant, broody profile of 2. Unfortunately you have to evaluate her from the rear also, and her tapering dock and undesirable set to her hocks rolls her to third.

Still in comparison to the dark pelted ewe, it is her overwhelming advantage in volume and broodiness that allows her to maintain the third position. She is not only more pulled apart in her lower skeleton, she is more blown apart through her midrib and better hold this width advantage at the top of her spine as well. This added broodiness should allow her a greater longevity as a replacement female within a flock.

Fourth Place:  3

Entry number: 1199

3 may have an advantage in show ring appeal as she is really long hipped and cool fronted in her profile shot. However when we get behind her, she gets tight and more terminal in her rib design, narrows at the hip and flattens in her lower leg. Most importantly, she is the harshest ribbed ewe that would be the most hard to maintain throughout her feeding and reproductive phases alike.
