Ewe Lambs 5-11 months

Class number:  002        Class Date:  6/3/07

Judge:   Sam Funk

Judging Contest Winners:  AZChamp

In a class where placings could easily change were all the sheep slick sheared identically and handled in person, C, B, D, E, F, A is my alignment for this class of ewe lambs.

First Place:  C

Entry number: 018

Exhibitor: EmsoffLambs
State: California
Sheep name/number: 032
Breed: Hampshire

Website: www.emsofflivestockcompany.com

C wins this class as she is the most balanced with regard to muscle and structure.

Second Place:  B

Entry number: 017

Exhibitor: ilovesuffolks
State: Virginia
Sheep name/number: 466
Breed: Suffolk/Hampshire

B, the ewe with the highest pin setting and the apparent advantage in style being laid in smoother through her shoulder places second in this class. Although she is in the pair of lighter muscled lambs in this class and may not be coming off as level and strong from her shoulder into her rack, I appreciate the eye appeal this ewe brings with her hip and smooth front.

Third Place:  D

Entry number: 022

Exhibitor: Alamb
State: California
Sheep name/number: Kooppa 1035
Breed: Suffolk

While the leveler hipped of the pair of wide based heavy muscled lambs could easily be placed second for advantages in muscle and rear leg set, I left D third preferring the higher pin set and style of B.

The ewe in third provides tremendous advantages in muscle volume and expression. This high volume, thick-ended ewe could make a tremendous brood ewe producing well muscled lambs. Although she appears to be carrying considerably more condition that the other ewes in the class and thus lacks some eye appeal, she is a strong ewe that could easily be moved up in class. While the ewe that has not been sheared may be more up-fronted, I preferred the overall size and scale of D.

Fourth Place:

Entry number: 025

While I do not appreciate seeing the longer-fleece on the front, E is more desirable in her muscle expression and “type” than F – being especially more expressive through her lower leg.

Fifth Place:  F

Entry number:  019

The larger framed F has an attractive profile with the exception of a loin that needs to be pinched down and a somewhat coarse appearing shoulder at the base. Still her top does not show as much dimension as E and she is considerably less expressive in her muscle pattern through the leg.

In a bottom pair of ewe lambs that lack the balance of the lambs above them in class, the levelness of structure placed F over A.

Sixth Place:  A

Entry number: 004

While A is a heavy structured, well-muscled ewe, she is the steep docked, rounded-hip ewe in the class.
