Judge:   Gail Christian

Judging Contest Winners:

Under 15: GeorgiaW

15-18: CrazySuey

Over 18: Califmom, ESheepFarms, Lucy, ptr, woolpuller

Official Placing: 1, 2, 3, 4
Cuts: 7, 1, 2

I believe we have an easy lamb to start the class, 1, a close middle pair, 2 and 3, and the bottom lamb,4 is at a disadvantage due to the other lambs in the class being slick shorn and he is carrying a couple of months of pelt.

I placed the class 1, 2, 3, 4 with cuts of 7, 1, 2.

First Place:  1

Entry number: 742

Exhibitor: SheepnPygs

State: OH

Sheep name/number: Schmillen

Breed: Suffolk X

Website: www.charlenesclublambs.com

Lamb 1 wins the class with ease, however, he does not look near as complete from the rear view as he does from the profile.  He is easily the most complete, balanced, structurally correct, heaviest muscled (determined from the profile) lamb of the class.  From the profile I noticed his long neck correctly placed on top of his shoulder, his levelness of both top and bottom lines, clean front, correct points, fullness in the rear flank, correct spring of rib, long and level in his hip with a plump leg that carries well down toward the hock.  I only wish he looked as impressive from the rear as he does from the side, however, from the rear he looks as good as any of the other lambs in the class.

Second Place:  2

Entry number: 747

Exhibitor: Megan9

State: CA

Sheep name/number: Stomper

Breed: Suffolk X

I'm not impressed with the side view of the lambs that make up the midddle pair, 2 and 3, however, I see more product (muscle) in 2 than I do in 3, especially from the rear.

From the side, 2 looks short sided.  He also slopes off the hip.  I do notice he is squatting in the picture and it takes away from his appearance, especially in style and balance.  From the rear, 2 looks longer bodied than from the side.  He appears correct over the top of his shoulder, gets wider as you travel down the rack and into the loin.  From the rear his is squarer through the dock than 3, is deeper in the twist with a lot more lower leg muscle than 3.

Third Place:  3

Entry number: 748

From the side 3 appears short sided.  Due to the way he is set up he appears to have a little too much depth of shoulder and he is not as long and level in the hip as you would want in a competitive market lamb.

It may be the angle of the rear picture because he does appear to be relatively wide and flat over the rack, however, he appears to slope off the loin, is not as wide through the pins as 2 and is more shallow in depth of twist with not as much muscle in the lower third as compared to 2.

Fourth Place:  4

Entry number; 754

The medium framed 4 appears to be average in length of side, is clean through the shoulder, correct at the shoulder points, has proper rib shape, however, he appears short hipped with a low dock set.  From the rear he appears square through the dock with average depth of twist and average in leg muscle.

Again, I placed the class 1, 2, 3, 4 with cuts of 7, 1, 2. I would be interested in reading your comments.
