I placed the class 2, 1, 4, 3 with cuts of 3, 1, 1.

This weeks class consist of four ewe lambs entirely different in style and body type.  Although each ewe lamb has some good qualities, there are certain things I would change about each one.

I’m starting the class with number 2 which I believe is the most complete ewe lamb in the class.  From the profile I noticed her length of side and balance starting with her extended neck properly placed on top of her shoulder.  True, she is a tad deep in her front, howeve, she still exhibits balance.  She has a long and level top line and she shows spring of rib, fullness of rear flank and a lot of capacity. This medium framed ewe lamb has plenty of bone, stands correctly on her feet and legs with enough shag to make a steer fitter envious.

When viewed from the rear I’m assuming she has a flat wide rack and loin.  Although she could be a little more square through the dock she does have depth of twist with substantial muscle in the lower third.  This ewe lamb bred to a ram that will complement her should make a good brood ewe.

Second Place:  1

I could have gone three ways for second place in the class, however, with a certain type ram in mind I’m going with the power ewe lamb, number 1 for second place. A true power lamb, this ewe lamb is on the small side of medium frame.  On the profile you have to notice the long neck properly placed.  She is level and balanced in both her top and bottom lines. She might be a tad round at the points, but, still very acceptable.  She too has great rib shape with a full rear flank.  I would call her bone dimension adequate, however, I would appreciate her more with additional bone. She does have proper set to her feet and legs with enough shag to be interesting.

From the rear you have to appreciate the sheer power she exhibits.  Sure, I would like to see a little more width over the rack, however, she does have the wedge shape that I appreciate.   She might be a little too round in her muscle mass, but not for a power judge.  I would appreciate her more if she were longer sided, however, she is balanced.

Third Place:  4

Entry number: 836
Exhibitor: EmsoffLambs
State: CA
Sheep name/number: 0242
Breed: Hampshire X Suffolk

I believe ewe number 4 fits into the third slot.  This is probably the largest framed ewe lamb in the class.  She is exceptionally clean in her front with a long extended neck properly placed.  Long level top and really shows balance, however, I would appreciate her a lot more with added muscle in her lower third.  Bred to a structurally correct power ram she should produce marketable babies.

Fourth Place:  3

Entry number: 830

In placing ewe 3 last in the class I believe she does have several positive traits, especially in length of side.  She is fairly level in her top line, but, I would like to see a more correct neck placement, and I would appreciate her more if she exhibited more width over her rack and loin, and was fuller in her rear flank.  I would like to see more correct placement of her feet and legs and I would certainly appreciate her more with additional muscle in her lower third.

Again, I placed the class 2, 1, 4, 3 with cuts of 3, 1, 1. Comments on the class are appreciated.
