Again, I would like to compliment the improvement of quality of sheep being sent into the online sheep show, as each of these ewes are practical club lamb production type ewes with subtle differences. Thus it comes down to personal preference, and I like them 3, 1, 4, 2 with cuts of 2, 3, 2. And before anyone gets mad, please remember that when I give a 2 point cut, I really do not care which way you would place them as long as you understand the differences.

In the initial pair of similar designed ewes, I prefer the added thickness and width possessed by the class winner, especially evident in the rear photo. I’ll be the first to admit she looks deeper chested from the profile, and is drawn in her flank, however she also appears to be pulling down on her front end in the picture and does not appear to be out of balance in the rear photo. So, with this aside, she appears to be longer sided and leveler in her topline than 1. As a bonus she progressively widens from her rack to her loin and hip in the rear photo, and most importantly she is the thickest ended ewe in the class that is wider through her pelvic cavity, and yet maintains some femininity and balance.

Sure 1 appears to be taller fronted and smoother at the point of her shoulder, still she is round in her top shape and not as big out of her upper dock as the class winner, so she is second. However in comparison to 4, she is a stouter constructed, leveler and squarer designed ewe lamb. She is more correct in her skeletal design, being cleaner fronted, bolder through her center rib and more maternal in her features. In addition her neck ties cleaner into a smoother neater shoulder.

Now, 4 is a thick topped big legged ewe that should inject a lot of muscle and thickness into her offspring, unfortunately she lacks the balance and femininity of our top pair, so I opt to leave her 3rd. Yet in a contrasting pair of concluding ewes, I prefer her added size, length and lateness of maturity to edge out the more youthful appearing 2. 4 is longer coupled, heavier muscled and bigger hipped than 2, and the more Suffolk appearing ewe is plumper stifled and deeper twisted as well.

There is no doubt that 2 is deep ribbed and trendy with all the extra wool on her legs, unfortunately, I do not read her to have much muscle shape down her top,she is the narrowest in her pin set and flattens and funnels to her lower leg so she is last.
