Official Placing: 2, 4, 1, 3

I rank the yearling ewes 2, 4, 1, 3 with cuts of 4, 2, 4.

First Place:  2

Sheep name/number:

Breed: Blackface cross

2 is simply the highest volume, most powerfully constructed ewe of the class.  Sure I would like to see her longer necked and more refined about her front end.  However in comparison to 4, she is bolder ribbed, deeper flanked and more ideal in her composition.  As a bonus she is thicker topped, deeper twisted and fuller through her lower leg.  I would predict the more Suffolk appearing ewe to producer harder handling, heavier muscled offspring that should excel in the show ring if comparably mated.

Second Place:  4

Entry number: 865

Exhibitor: PeteM

State: OK

Sheep name/number: Cabaniss 10-406B Beauty

Breed: Shropshire

There is no doubt that 4 is longer fronted and smoother about the point of her shoulder and is more trendy in her look with the added shag on her legs. Unfortunately she is flatter ribbed and lighter legged being specifically flatter through the lower third of her leg than 2.

In an extremely close middle pair, I choose to use the straighter drawn better balanced of the two high volume  ewes.  4’s neck ties higher into a smoother shoulder, she is more elevated through the floor of her chest and longer and leveler from hooks to pins, resulting in a slight advantage of femininity and balance.

Third Place:  1

Entry number: 863

Sheep name/number: 210
Breed: Hampshire X Suffolk

Some may prefer the added skeletal width and fullness of stifle in the ewe that is bagging.  She just appears to be plainer made and bolder at the point of her shoulder.

Yet, there is no doubt that she has a more maternal look and greater capacity than 3.  The ewe in the stand is more correct in the angle of her shoulder thus has more flex to her knee, hock and pastern than 3 and should remain a functional unit in the flock for a greater number of years.  As a bonus she is softer middled and easier fleshing, and bigger hipped.  All of this leads me to believe that she will be a much more functional female in a pasture breeding and lambing scenario.

Fourth Place:  3

Entry number: 863

Exhibitor: PeteM

State: OH

Sheep name/number: Cole Farms 2295P Hershey

Breed: Shropshire

3 is a long sided ewe that is big racked and has a full and flat loin that ties into a long hip.  However as a productive replacement ewe, she is too tight ribbed, straight in her shoulder and tight in her spine.  She is too  narrow based and clubby in her appearance allowing me to think that she would have a greater number of single births, be harder to maintain and lack the longevity within the flock that the three bolder ribbed easier fleshing ewes that place above her possess.
